Abstract

Archetypal knowledge and ideas of humanity about the surrounding reality are represented at the linguistic level in the form of lexemes. The object of research of this article is mytholexemes, which are the result of lexicalization of mythological symbolism. Lexical units that denote mythical creatures are called mytholexemes or mythonyms, they, like lexical units, perform a nominative, significative function, differing in syncretism, that is the non-separability of the entity and its name. We believe that it is possible to differentiate the meanings of words with the general archiseme "fairy-tale creature" by applying the method of oppositions based on the allocation of privative, equipolent and graded oppositions. The purpose of this article is to study the structural, semantic and functional features of English mytholexemes in the diachronic aspect, as well as to consider the word-forming potential of mytholexemes as derived units.
