Abstract

The present-day system of means of verbal interaction is characterized by the emergence of new textual formations which mainly circulate on the Internet as short-length textual units. Due to the limited volume of such texts the interaction between the elements of the textual structure acquires specific character, which calls for special theoretical insight. Modern English news items on Instagram, which belong to the category of small-format texts, are viewed in the article as polycode pieces of discourse representing a system of meanings formed by the combination of verbal and non-verbal means of expression. The purpose of the study is to identify the means and methods of creating the pragma-semantic content of the news items studied, as well as to describe the process of the development and formation of the integral meaningful construct. The formation of the discourse system is described in terms of linguosynergetics, namely, it is considered as the progression of the discourse system towards its functional attractor. This process is viewed as the one involving the coordinated interaction of all the multi-level polycode elements of the discourse, which is influenced by the external environment and preconditioned by the potential of the discourse system for functional (pragmasemantic) self-organization.
