Abstract

Stand-up comedy, as a global cultural phenomenon, plays an important role in identifying and understanding social issues in modern society. The problem of using black humor in this genre requires studying the mechanisms of its functioning in various cultural contexts. The lack of research on the comparative aspects of black humor in stand-up comedy in different countries creates a gap in our understanding of the culturally conditioned characteristics of comedy. The aim of this study is to identify the common and distinctive features of the use of black humor in stand-up comedy in the US and Russia through an analysis of linguistic techniques and sociocultural context. The results showed that common features include criticism of social contradictions through the use of absurdity, irony, hyperbole, and metaphor, but American comedians focus on racism and gender norms, while Russian comedians focus on the absurdity of everyday life. The novelty of the study lies in the systematic comparison of the cultural characteristics of black humor in stand-up comedy in the two countries.
