Neologisms in English: Ways of Word Formation and Semantic Features

Neologisms play a great role in the development of any language, being an important and obligatory form of enriching its vocabulary. As the process of emergence of new lexical units, which are accepted in society and fixed in the language, is constant and continuous, there are practically no studies and analysis of the structure and semantic features of emerging English neologisms. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to describe English neology taking into account ways to coin new words and their semantic features. The article considers the structural and semantic classification of neologisms using the example of the English vocabulary, provides a rationale for each type of neologism, numerous examples found in the media and modern publications and analyzed by the authors. For the study, neologisms were collected using the continuous sampling method. The statistical counting and qualitative analysis methods were applied to the examples obtained. The results of the study have made it possible to identify the most common types of neologisms, to compile a lexical classification of the selected lexical units, and to examine changes in the English language triggered by the emergence and adoption of new words.
