Instructions for Exercises: The Functional Aspect (Based on French Textbooks of French as a Foreign Language for Beginners)

Despite the popularity of online learning platforms, foreign language textbooks retain the leading role in teaching various aspects of speech activity. The existing variety of electronic resources and the introduction of artificial intelligence into the learning process make textbook authors more demanding about the choice of topics, the selection of materials, types of exercises, and task presentations. Instructions for exercises are the object of study for methodologists in terms of the type and sequence of exercises. Their linguistic aspect remains poorly explored. The goal of this paper is to identify the models and analyze French linguistic means that describe the situation within the framework of a task, set an algorithm for its implementation based on existing knowledge, and consider the functions of tasks for beginners in French. The analysis of the French textbook material shows that instruction for exercises that are accurate, specific, logic, informative, and persuasive perform several functions: the main one is controlling, while the secondary ones are orienting, explaining, and organizing. The results obtained provide an additional reason for further study of instructional discourse, demonstrating that instructional text is an integral part of a foreign language textbook.
