Culturally Marked Vocabulary as a Means of Constructing the Media Image of the United Kingdom

Abstract

In media linguistics, the issue of the functional and semantic organization of culturally marked vocabulary and its role in representing the national image in media discourse remains insufficiently explored. The aim of this study is to identify semantic groups of culturally marked units in The Guardian publications (January – July 2025) and to determine their contribution to constructing representations of the United Kingdom in the national media space. The methodological framework includes continuous sampling, content analysis, discourse analysis, and corpus metrics such as frequency (IPM) and the type-token ratio (TTR). The analysis has shown that ethnographic and socio-political realia constitute a stable core of the national image, while geographical realia and realia of spiritual life provide adaptability of media discourse to current events. The findings refine the mechanisms of cultural code actualization in media texts, expand the methodological toolkit of corpus-based media linguistics, and can be applied in comparative studies of cultural code representation across different national media discourses.
