Comparative Model of Cognitive Dominant “Russian Saints” in the Sermons of St. Luka of Simferopol and Crimea and St. John of Shanghai and San-Francisco

Abstract

The problem of studying religious discourse from social and linguistic points of view focuses on the structure of Orthodox sermon, forming a current direction in the field of modern cognitive linguistics. Within the frames of the theory of religious discourse, the issues of structuring and functioning of textual cognitive dominants in the informative module of the triadic discourse model have not been sufficiently studied, which conditions the importance of the topic of the study. The relevance of the study is explained by the necessity to determine the role of cognitive dominants of Orthodox preaching in the modern interpretive discourse theory. The purpose of the study is to identify cognitive dominants of the two different-language sermons, construct their comparative model aimed at defining specific features of the personal discourse of the two Orthodox preachers. The study presents the results of cognitive-hermeneutical analysis of architectonics of two Orthodox sermons: St. Luka's of Simferopol and Crimea sermon in Russian and St. John's of Shanghai and San-Francisco sermon in English. As a result of applying the algorithm of modeling and complex interpretation of cognitive dominants of the two sermons, the study revealed the concept "Russian saints" as the cognitive dominant of both ones. The analysis of the sermons identified the characteristic features of nominative fields of concepts expressed through discursive activation. The study allowed constructing the comparative model of the cognitive dominant “Russian saints” in the two sermons, which determined the specificity of implications accompanying the semantic realization of the cognitive dominant. The results of the study proved that modeling of the cognitive dominant “Russian saints” in the two multilingual sermons is conditioned by a triad of parameters including spiritual, cultural and personal informative perspectives. The obtained results contribute to the theoretical and methodological basis of cognitive linguistics, in particular, add to the theory of modeling textual cognitive dominants.
