Abstract

A comparative analysis of children's folklore works of different genres is important for identifying the features of national culture. The study of “scary” children's stories based on Russian and English folklore as a means of education has not been thoroughly researched. The aim of this paper is to describe fear as a fundamental category of culture and its role in the history of studying children's scary folklore in Russian folkloric studies. The paper provides a comparative analysis of how fear can be used to create a therapeutic effect when introducing children to scary stories. It also characterizes the ethical attitudes of Russians and Britons in the plots of the stories and their role in socializing children. The cultural traditions of raising children and preparing them for life in society in Russia and Britain are revealed. It has been proven that the use of “scary” stories for children in the learning process contributes to the strengthening of their psychophysiological condition, the formation of social connections, and the assimilation of national parenting traditions. The findings of this research can be applied in the educational process by psychologists, educators, and philologists.
