Strategies for Translating Idiomatic Expressions in M.Y. Lermontov’s "A Hero of Our Time"

Using Mikhail Lermontov’s novel A Hero of Our Time and its translation into English (M. Parker, 1958) and Ingush (B. Zyazikov, 1940) as the research material, the study analyzes how culture-specific semantics of fixed expressions are conveyed in translation. The focus lies on identifying typical challenges in translating idioms: lack of direct equivalents, cultural discrepancies, and difficulties preserving imagery and emotional impact. The methodological framework is based on a functional-semantic approach, which accounts for both the linguistic structure of idioms and their communicative functions in the text. The findings reveal that the English translation tends to simplify and neutralize idiomatic expressions, while the Ingush translation strives to retain their figurative structure. The study examines various translation techniques, including adaptation, functional equivalents, and calquing, emphasizing the role of cultural context in shaping translator’s solutions.
