Abstract

In recent years, research in the field of political discourse and media discourse has attracted close attention of domestic and foreign researchers. One of the most important elements of political discourse is headlines. Despite the interest in this issue, insufficient attention is paid, in particular, to the names of political talk shows as a channel for forming political guidelines and broadcasting political information from the addresser to the mass addressee. The question of studying the mechanisms through which the title, as a special semantic core, comprehensively and purposefully affects the mass addressee remains insufficiently investigated. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the linguistic means functioning in the names of political talk shows and producing an orienting and suggestive effect on the mass addressee in English-language political discourse. The names of political talk shows are separate speech works of various functional and stylistic orientation and are the most important element of political discourse, performing its perceptive and suggestive functions and properties, such as ideologicality, evaluability, expressiveness, and manipulativeness. They have a significant semantic-pragmatic potential, contributing to the fulfillment of the orienting and pragmatic function of political communication. In order to record and analyze emotionally expressive techniques, the paper considers means of imagery and expressiveness in the names of political talk shows, functioning at various levels of orienting speech influence. The study was carried out on the basis of an integrated approach, including methods of discursive, stylistic and quantitative analysis. The actual material of the study was obtained by the method of continuous sampling on the YouTube channel and included 60 titles of English-language political talk shows, in which 115 means of imagery and expressiveness were identified. As a result of the study, the percentage of the most common stylistic means recorded in the names of political talk shows to their total number was determined. The research revealed the main means of imagery and expressiveness that produce the maximum pragmatic effect, including replacement figures: hyperbole, metaphor, irony, metonymy; correlation shapes: comparisons and qualifier synonyms. The obtained results can be used in political linguistics for studying the English-language media course, techniques and means of its influence on the mass consciousness.
