Representation of Positive Evaluation in Online Student Reviews of British Universities

The study of genre and axiological specifics of various kinds of online reviews is among the promising directions in modern linguistics. The least studied types of reviews include online reviews containing positive value judgments of students about studying at a university, which play an important role in creating a positive image of the educational institution. The purpose of this study is to identify the specific characteristics of expressing positive evaluation in the texts of online reviews of British universities. As a result of the study, it is found that the main means of expressing positive evaluation in the reviews are lexical units containing a positive evaluative seme in their semantic structure. The most common types of evaluative meanings realized in student reviews are specific evaluations mostly represented with utilitarian evaluations. These evaluation types are based on criteria such as convenience, psychological comfort and active extracurricular activities, which are of the greatest value to British students. General evaluative meanings are less frequent than specific ones, but their share in the total volume of practical material is quite high. General evaluative meanings to a greater extent than specific evaluation types realize the author’s intention of making a recommendation on the choice of a university and encouraging the reader of the review to follow this recommendation.
