Abstract

Computer games, which immerse players in virtual reality, are a popular form of new media. The interactive nature of computer games determines their nonlinear structure, providing the player with the right to make decisions in a choice-making situation. Despite the large number of publications devoted to the study of computer games, systematic and comprehensive studies of the phenomenon of nonlinearity in the humanities are virtually absent. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze nonlinearity as a constructive principle of computer games and determine methods for its implementation. An analysis of the scientific literature, as well as the gameplay, mechanics, and narrative of computer games with nonlinear elements, revealed the main methods for implementing nonlinearity. Nonlinear narrative is associated with the presence of plot branches and a large number of endings, as well as the ability to choose dialogue lines. Nonlinear gameplay involves the player's choice of strategy, the presence of alternative game mechanics, the openness of the game world, and individual goal setting during gameplay. The study revealed the ambivalent nature of nonlinearity in computer games, linked to the unique experience of each player and the limitations of the program code. The results of the study open a new theoretical direction in the study of nonlinearity in computer games.
