Abstract

The paper examines the major issues concerning the studies of memory in linguistics and their role in the transdisciplinary field named “memory studies”. The study outlines the stages, which shaped memory studies as a new discipline, concentrating on collective memories about the past, as well as discusses a number of approaches to the analysis of the phenomenon in question in linguistics. The research deals with the possibility of the methods of cognitive linguistics and discourse analysis application to explore collective representations of the past, along with other approaches. The linguistic approach to this problem focuses on the human’s ability to form and transmit knowledge about the past to further generations, as well as on the nature of the relationship between mental images of the past with their verbal representation peculiarities at different  stages of the society and language development.
