Linguistic and Cultural Knowledge Interaction as a Basis for Country Studies Linguistic and Cultural Dictionary Compiling

A Country Studies Linguistic and Cultural dictionary is a source of lexicographic information that contains data on the condition of language and culture in a given society in a certain country. Relevance of the issue under consideration is explained by the fact that this type of bilingual dictionaries reflects constant dynamics in the development of linguistic and conceptual system of the society in question, which is directly related to the interaction of linguistic and cultural knowledge. The process under consideration is being identified at the level of linguistic meanings objectification alongside cultural and linguistic facts interpretation. From this point of view, the mode of compiling as well as theoretical description of a Country Studies Linguistic and Cultural dictionary, which also possesses an educational dictionary features, has not received all the attention it deserves so far, due to recent concentration of theoretical linguists and practical lexicographers activities in the field of linguocultural and special dictionaries. The purpose of the investigation is to highlight the most significant aspects of lexicography as referred to description and interpretation of new linguistic meanings and methods of their presentation in a Country Studies Linguistic and Cultural dictionary, with special attention to the English non-equivalent vocabulary and the way it is represented. The article deals with the analysis of dictionary fixation of meanings taken from the New Zealand linguistic and cultural material and is based on contextual semantic and conceptual analysis with reference to the method of dictionary definitions. The results of the analysis concern with the necessity to take into special consideration the interaction of linguistic and extralinguistic knowledge, which reflects the features of conceptualization within a certain linguocultural community, in the course of a Country Studies Linguistic and Cultural dictionary compiling. The study reveals some new trends in linguistic meanings actualization in the English-speaking society, which opens new opportunities in the study of linguistic and cultural aspects intertwining within the current condition of Germanic languages.
